Story:
This is actually 2 days hiking in the canyons around Painted Canyon off of Box Canyon Road between the Salton Sea (the town of Mecca) and highway 10. Photogenic slot canyons and hills form a maze of washes from centuries of erosion. Painted Canyon Road is dirt the 5 miles to the trail head, but well maintained and any car can easily drive it despite the washboarding.
The middle trail is called Ladder Trail as several ladders were put in to get up dry water falls so you could continue through the narrow slot canyon.
The east most trail also had several ladders to allow you to get up dry water falls to neat narrow sections.
At the northern most points you join by climbing up out of the canyon and on to the ridge lines where views of the Salton Sea and the maze below make the climb out of the slot canyons worth the effort.
The west most canyon we took only because we missed the correct canyon to go up next to it. It was not a narrow slot canyon, but a neat wider wash in most places.
