Major ski day and drive home - Oregon, United States

Story:
Every year since reaching that magic age of 50 I've challenged/treated myself on a day near my birthday to skiing 50,000 vertical feet in one day.

Hitting that much vertical requires a lot of things come together properly. You need: 1. fast groomed runs 2. Good visibility. 3. No lift lines. 4. Conditioning. 5. A plan.

This year the snow was a little less than ideal. We'd had major powder dumps during the week so there were ruts almost everywhere. That slowed me down a bit and, as my legs were working harder, fatigue became an issue.

The plan is simple - stick to teh chairs that have the steepest average gradients. In the case of Bachelor this is Summit and Northwest Express lifts. I did about 10 runs on each, which accounted for 75% of my total vert for the day.

This year I got lucky this year with the lift lines. Although this was a Saturday the lines on Summit and NWX were very short all day. Because of Saturday crowds on the slopes I did have to ski on less popular runs, which meant a bit more traverse than normal.

Sorry for the lack of pics. For some reason my Everytrail App "blue screened". I didn't take time to debug on the slopes. But it did keep running, so you get to see the map of my drive home. Ha!
Tips:
For mega vert: Pick the day, Plan the runs, Keep fueled. and Have fun!

Don't drive home after a day like this if you can avoid it.
