Story:
Hike along Hollonbeck Canyon on a late afternoon. The distance saved (2 miles) is one way. The trail configuration is in-n-out, not a loop, and it is easy to moderate. The recent rains made the landscape green and lush, but also made the creek crossings (3) treacherous. We stopped and turned around at the last saved map pin because it was getting dark.
The whole area between Dulzura and Jamul outside San Diego is beautiful. Rolling green hills with steep rocky peaks here and there.

Tips:
The water stream running along the trail was deep, so we searched for low crossings away from the trail. This is probably due to the recent heavy rain in the area, I bet that most of the year this creek is dry or a trickle.
There are narrower unmarked trails that run along the creek and can save you one or two water crossings.

I hiked there that day too. We continued on the right fork, went around the hill and down the road you went up. The creek was very high that day, higher than I'd ever seen it, but the canyon was also greener than I'd ever seen too. That creek runs year round, but is, like you said, just a trickle in places.
