Story:
Last September I visited three forest fire lookout sites in the Riggins area: Chair Point, Nut Basin, and Slate Point. Two of the lookouts are still in use each summer. The third at Nut Basin no longer exists, all that remains is the stone foundation.
My trip started at the Shorts Bar Campground on the Salmon River just east of Riggins. I rode my ATV to the lookouts but you could easily drive a car to Chair Point. The road to the other two lookouts requires a vehicle with a little more clearance such as your typical SUV or 2 wheel drive pickup.
The views from all three lookouts are fantastic!
Tips:
The day I visited, I stuck to the main roads. However if you are riding an ATV or dirt bike there is a short cut trail that directly follows the North/South ridge between Chair Point and Nut Basin
