Story:
Still having trouble staying asleep for more than 2 hrs at a time, but are doing all the right things (we have crossed more than 3 timezones in a week).
Day 3 - Paris and Eiffel Tower Dinner
Well, what a day! Started with an early recon breakfast for the Catacombs, we were 2nd in line this time.
We didn't know what to expect with the Catacomb tour (seems a little macabre, as these were old quarries where hundred's of thousands (maybe millions) of bodies were moved from overflowing cemeteries during the Black Plaque and Revolution periods)
Though words can't describe, it was a very peaceful and interesting, circumspect walk through galleries of bones laid in beautiful patterns (Only the French can make Death a beautiful thing) - it showed the respect that these were treated with after the consecration of the Catacombs. Not, though for the claustrophobic or , as one sign states ,"for people with a nervous disposition"
We stopped for lunch at a Japanese restaurant (surreal really), where they fed us like kings (and queens) and finished off with the strongest (almost ethonol) shot delivered with the bill (Yes, I did check it was for drinking, and not hand cleaning).
Quick tour of the Pantheon, and more dead bodies (albeit they were in tombs), Joy didn't go into see Marie Curie - as she does not need more radiation doses -she gets enough at work (lol) - what a magnificent feat of architecture, and more proof that the French did everything BIG.
We met up with more Aussie Friends, Rob and Gail and went down to do some Laundry in the local Laundromat - what an experience.
My French is holding up, and getting better, mind you I keep pushing it and had an interesting time trying to buy some Metamucil from a chemist - " medicine for Blockage of the behind!", to which she gesticulated with a quite obscene hand movement for 'plunging' and to "clean out the behind!" But we got what we needed finally!
After obligatory pre-dinner wine and cheeses, we were picked up by the cutest French 'Tour Guide' for a cruise down the Seine and Dinner at the Eiffel Tower, he however ended out just being a driver and ticket buyer (but you gotto love the ingenuity of the Left Bank Capitalists - which is rare because he told me the "Left Think and the Right Spend" - but I reckon the Left know more about extraction.
Cruise was lovely and Dinner was to die for, very well organised and executed for large numbers of people and a good time was had by all on the 1st level of the Tower.
Minor Hiccup, when our driver failed to meet us on time, and turned up 10 minutes late, out of breath and explained he had "locked his keys in the car whilst it was running - and can't get a hold of anyone to help", so we taxied it home.
Off tomorrow for the Loire Valley with Rob and Gayle - stay tuned for more adventures!
Debra Update:
Not interested in bones so stayed at home sleeping!!!!! Had a lovely dinner and drinks on the Eiffel Tower. The Aussies I'm sharing this holiday with are very noisy though and tell very bad jokes!!! Looking forward to a car ride on the "other" side today. Hope David remembers "wide left and hard right"
