Story:
Field trip for a class offered through Merritt College: Biol 62H: Natural History of Lassen Volcanic National Park. I camped at Manzanita Lake in the northwest corner of the park. On day one we met at the Loomis Visitor's Center/Museum and then drove to the northeast section of the park and did a hike of Cinder Cone near Butte Lake. Later we did the Lily Pond Nature Trail and walk around Reflection Lake. Day two we met at the Manzanita Lake boat launch to do some bird watching but there was not that many birds out. After, we drove to the Devastated Area to do the interpretive trail there but it was closed for trail work so then we met at the trailhead for Lassen Peak (trail also under construction) for a short discussion about the flora/fauna/geology of Lassen Peak area. After we drove to the Bumpass Hell trailhead for a hike into Bumpass Hell, an active hydrothermal area.

Tips:
Lassen is a beautiful park with lots to see and do if you are willing to get out of your car and walk a little: volcanoes, lakes, hydrothermal features, and forested areas. AND a lot less crowded than most of California's more famous national parks.

Call ahead about trail and road conditions. The road through the park past the southwest entrance is closed in the winter due to heavy snow.
