Story:
With a few hours to kill before our scheduled train trip up White Pass, I decided to get out on my own and do a little hiking in the hills surrounding Skagway. After crossing the RR tracks and starting up the trail it didn't take long for it to occur to me that hiking alone in the state with more dangerous animals per capita than any other might not be the wisest thing to do. I looked around at the beautiful scenery, shrugged and texted my wife telling her where to find my mangled carcass in the event I didn't return, and pressed on. I'm glad I did. This was one of the most beautiful hikes I'd ever been on. The only wildlife I encountered was a set of wolf tracks in the mud by the lake.

My only regret was that I was on a timetable and could only hike one hour out and one hour back. If you ever make it up to Skagway, be sure to allow time for some hiking.
Tips:
Stop in at the Skagway Visitor Center for a great map of local hiking trails. It opens at 8:00 a.m.

Very nice and detailed. We'll be there end of August and plan on doing the hike. Thanks.
