Story:
from my buddy Andy's blog:
I finally managed to ride the Flume Trail today. It has been too
long since I have traveled to the east shore of Tahoe to ride this
classic trail. Normally, the Aspen Trees are absolutely glowing as
you ride up North Canyon and shoot down to Marlette Lake from the
Spooner State Park. Today, October 26, 2008, it was warm enough to
ride in shorts and a T Shirt. There was not more than an occasional
breeze to bring down a few of the remaining yellow-gold leaves
clinging to branches of a few groves of Aspens. Those trees that have
leaves still clinging to there branches were bright and iridescent in
the bright sunlight. However, the show was limited this season, or at
least at this time of year, as many of the trees were already bare.
The fall color displayed by the Aspen Trees is only one reason to ride
the Flume Trail. The other reason is all about Lake Tahoe. The views
as you begin riding the Flume Trail from the dam at the north west end
of Marlette Lake are spectacular. Today, they were just outstanding.
The lack of wind, cloudless blue sky, and pleasant temperature left
the lake as smooth as a mirror. We sat on large granite boulders just
staring out at the lake with its mirror finish. After taking a number
of pictures and riding to the beginning of Tunnel Creek Road, we
decided to just turn around and ride the Flume backwards. I cannot
remember if I have ever done this, but it was interesting to see the
views in reverse, as we rode back to Marlette Lake and then to the
car. Round trip was about 20 miles. We could have ridden down Tunnel
Creek Road to Highway 28 and picked up a $12 per person shuttle, but
this worked just as well. There are a number of other options for
riding this trail as a loop for those of you who have not been on this
trail. The trail is in very good condition, at least the portion we
rode. There is still time to enjoy this ride before winter sets in
for good.

I've done this one twice before, but the reverse route. The second time my tire popped just before the decent and I had to walk the bike 4 miles because my friend brought the wrong bump...good memories...
