Story:
The Bay Area Ridge Trail organization runs two major organized fundraiser hikes every year: Ridge to Bridge in the spring in Marin, and the Ridge Trail Cruz in the fall in the south bay. Each event has a series of hikes, bike rides, and equestrian rides; in the fall, there's been a "family hike" for the past couple years that my family has participated in. This year, the Ridge Trail council decided to add a family hike to Ridge to Bridge.
We were asked to be "lead family", which led to my wife putting together a simple scavenger hunt that the kids really seemed to enjoy. Additionally, Joel from the Ridge Trail had arranged for an NPS Ranger, Ranger Esperanza, to accompany our hike. Ranger Esperanza's explanations of what we were seeing and the history of the area kept both the children and parents engaged in the hike. She even took us on a side-trip to the nearby GGNRA stables, where the kids got to pet horses and see some wild herbs (onions and mustard, as well as radish).
Unfortunately, the weather was pretty lousy -- cold, windy, and overcast; occasionally rainy. As a result, the time at the beach wasn't as fun as any of us had been expecting it to be. As a group, we pretty much grabbed a quick bite to eat at the beach and then headed back.

Not entire sure how I managed nearly a full mile over the previous trip (http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=532087). Sure didn't feel that much longer.
