Story:
I've never hiked in Mount Diablo SP, and figured springtime green with all of the flowers blooming would be the perfect occasion.  Indeed, the flowers were fantastic, and along with the usual favorites, I got to see several less common species.
A group of 10 started the hike together, and then three of us split from the main group after a break at Deer Flat.  They were headed for the summit, while we chose to turn back along the ridgeline to Eagle Peak and then back to the trailhead.
The weather for most of the trip was windy and cloudy.  The summit of Mount Diablo was obscured by clouds during the entire hike, but at our lower elevations the views were quite good.  Along the exposed ridgeline, I thought the winds would be an issue, but fortunately the trail traversed the northerly and lee side of the ridge for the most part and we were sheltered from the main brunt of the wind.
We found the nearly nine year old geocache Fly Like a Beagle (GCE4C) near the summit of Eagle Peak.
Tips:
The hike up Mitchell Canyon is gradual for the first couple of miles, while the descent from Eagle Peak is quite steep.  While it was nice to get warmed up on the easy stretch up the canyon, my tired legs were wishing we had saved that stretch for the last.  It might be best to reverse the loop and go up steeply right from the start.  Pick your poison!
