Story:
This is a classic, short, family friendly hike in Santa Teresa County Park. We took the Stiles Ranch trail up the hill from the Fortini Entrance, and went over the hill, passed a first canyon and a second climb, to then reach MIne Hill Trail, which we took until the junction with Fortini Trail. We hiked along the flat Fortini Trail back to the parking lot.
This is a great season for hiking. The wildflowers are out. The poppies on the switchbacks at the beginning of Stiles Ranch are legendary (and probably not naturally seeded). Lots of blue dicks, wild onions, popcorn flowers, and the first jewel flowers. The kids had fun searching for all these flowers.

Jeff, it's a Cow Killer (in the Dasymutila species). I have seen one each time I hike in this area. Looks like a furry ant, but it's actually a wingless female wasp. My book say that they have some of the most painful stings in the insect world. Better not mess with her...
