Story:
1st Track:
Last week, March 3, 2010 Buzz (on his FatCat), Ed and I on ATVs, rode to Reynolds Creek and then hiked up river on the north side for about a mile. This day, March 7, 2010 we were on the south side of Reynolds Creek and up on top and directly across from the prior hiked trail.
At the beginning of the first track we attempted to find the exact location of the historical marker related to Beck Ditch (China Ditch: see earlier EveryTrail track date Jan. 11, 2010 for more detail). After considerable searching and exploring, we determined there is no historical marker per se, only something on a map that is giving a general reference or assigned importance to the historical nature of the China Ditch project.
By studying satellite maps and overlaying topographical imagery one can see China Ditch runs exactly along the 2600 foot contour line. You can follow the ditch from the very beginning, inside Reynolds Creek, through the desert to what is now the feed lot and beyond, for approximately a mile. We were on the lookout for mountain sheep both trips. None were spotted, although there was lots of sign.
2nd Track:
Although the day was Sunday (meaning there would be too many people out and about) the weather was perfect for riding so we trailered the ATVs to the Owyhees. We left out of the Chalky Butte parking lot and hit the first geocache which was within a relative short distance from the parking lot. Before we got to the cache we had already encountered motorcycles, UTVs and ATVs. Later we encountered horses and hikers. About the only thing we didn't see was a unicycle, but then we weren't out there the entire day.
Eventually ended up at the edge of the rim overlooking Reynolds Creek and the area we hiked last week. This allowed for some great photographs.
Due to heavy rains from the last year, several of the sand washes which had be passable were now impassable due to rocks and boulders blocking the path for the ATV but I believe Buzz could have gotten through. You can see from the track we had to backtrack on several occasions.
Ed took several short videos of us negotiating washed out areas and rock piles. He combined all the video which can be seen here:
