Story: Decided to have a look at the old Tanglewood Nature Center and Museum trails for some skiing on this trip.
Please forgive my poor mapping today, these are the drawn in trails best I could manage I didn't have my GPS on me!
Well laid out trail network by colors, maps posted on trail and at the museum building.
Blue Trail 1.7 mile Blue bird
Purple 0.19 Children's
Green 0.96 Presidents
Red 2.99 Red oak
Gold 1.51 Tanglefoot
Pink 0.43 Whitetail
Yellow 1.01 Warbler
I took a sample of many of them today, starting on the red trail working SW then Yellow into Blue. There were many steep and winding sections and as the snow was crusty and fast it was very technical skiing today with the back country skis. Trails aren't groomed and well traveled by snowshoe and skiers.
From the blue I worked over to the red trail again and turned north to start my return. This is there is a wonderful straight glide here had I come from the other direction! Hooked up to the green trail where I saw the most evidence of skiing (there was ski and snowshoe tracks on all trails) crossed the field under the TV tower and linked up with the pink trail and a nice fast run back to the start.
Just a wonderful shush and much more exciting and engaging than the typical country club.
Tips: If you want to ski the trails give the office a call (607)732 4880 and ask how things are. They were most helpful when I did this. I would advise also to stop in the office and look at the 3D display of the trails to get your head around the up and down nature of it and plan your route. If you're on your own carry a cell phone and whistle in case you need it and even better ski with a buddy! Don't tree ski any faster than you want to hit a tree!
