Woodside Bakery Ride - California, United States

This is the short version of our Saturday Morning Bakery Ride.  I leave my house in Palo Alto around 7:20 and ride to the Woodside Bakery where several of us meet.  Today there were about 10, but sometimes it's just two of us.  The route is decided on the spot, and is usually about 40 miles, over to the coast and back, or just climbing and descending some of the hills in the Pacific Coast Range.  I can't stay out that long, so I cut it short most of the time, as I did today.

There's no time to stop, so I took most of these photos while riding.   Some of the pictures are of the riders and where we stop, but some are of significant places, mundane to local riders, but maybe of interest if you are far far away.

So many cyclists are injured or killed in these parts, I am trying to increase everyone's awareness of the problem.  To that end, I often point out spots where one of us has been injured or killed by an automobile driver.  This account is no exception.
The pace of this ride is not for the faint of heart.  So, think about doing the route, but not necessarily about joining up with the group.

As for safety, particularly on the winding hilly sections, you must stay far to the right to avoid cars.   There's no limit to how far you should take your defensive riding.
