Story:
We knew the waterfalls would be good after the recent storms, so Antony, Dave, Laurent, Sammy, David and I headed out to Big Basin this weekend. We had a rough loop planned that included the Skyline to the Sea Trail so we were a bit disappointed when we showed up and learned the trail was closed due to a washed out bridge and fallen old-growth redwoods across the trail.

Not a group to let a simple trail closure ruin our day, we headed down the Sunset Trail towards Berry Creek where there are several falls. Sure enough they were flowing beautifully and we enjoyed the hike and the photography opportunities.
On the return hike we made a loop that took us over Mount McAbee on our way back to headquarters. It made for a great day long loop - about 12 miles and 3000-ish feet of gain. A bit of variety in scenery and terrain kept the whole day fun and interesting. This is a great hike - try it!

I bought a Garmin Colorado 400t based on your recommendation and your tracks specifically from big basin (it's the nicest park close to me, so I go there a lot). I have two other GPS devices (an external bluetooth gps receiver, and a smartphone w/ gps built in) both of which could not lock on at all even when I entered clearings, so I was skeptical of the Garmin, too..but..
It works AWESOME! I haven't had a lot of time to take photos (wahh rain!!) but I've gotten out there a few times so far; Trails are on my profile :)
I have something which may interest you, I took the $3 trail map and geolocated it on Google Earth, then imported into my Garmin.. That's right, trail maps with GPS:

=D
PM me if you want the map files as I'm not exactly sure on the legality of sharing them freely..
