Kayak Fox River -- Sheridan to Wedron, Fall Colors - Illinois, United States

Story: For this beautiful fall day, we kayaked the Fox River from Sheridan to Wedron, IL.  This 12 mile stretch of is a beautiful section of the river featuring St Peter's Sandstone bluffs complemented by the beautiful Fall colors on the trees. 

The launch ramp is behind "The Last Resort" in Sheridan.  It's private and you are supposed to pay a nominal fee to use.  The tavern owner very nicely let us use tables to eat our picnic lunch.

The sandstone outcroppings are visible on the first quarter of the trip.  The major bluffs start at Indian Island and the Blakes Landing Nature preserve.  The cliffs have unique Yew trees growing on them; the cliffs have notches where swallows nest, and several shallow caves are visible at the water line level.

The take-out point (we skipped the Ayers Landing area) is at the C&M Canoe rental / Fox River Tavern.  It is just South of the Wedron Silica Company's factory.

For this trip, we saw Great Blue Heron, Hawks, and Turkey Vultures. 

Tips: It had been raining this week and the water levels were higher than ordinary.  At times the Fox River has shallow areas harder to navigate.  For this trip, we had no problems.  Also, for this trip the current was about 4 mph.  Very nice.
