Story:
My seven year old son has wanted to try backpacking for a couple of years. This is the year that I figured he was big enough to pack his own sleeping bag, which is just too bulky for me to fit into my pack along with everything else. We picked up half pound ruck sack from REI and with his sleeping bag and some clothing, the pack came to 5.5 pounds which is about 10% of his body weight. Just about a perfect weight for him and he carried it quite well.

The route was a pretty trail that parallels Liberty Creek as it meanders through the Liberty Creek Park valley. We passed a beaver dam created reservoir on the West side of the trail and walked under the trees most of the way. There were lots of places we could have stopped had my son run out of steam, but the desired destination was the Cedar Grove, a favorite for young scouts, just over two miles down the trail.

This was our third attempt at taking this trip. The second time there was a storm warning and large hailstones fell on much of the region. This last time we had a 70% chance of rain and when asked my son said that he doesn't mind going for a hike in the rain. The more he thought about it, the more he wanted it to rain. I was glad that the only precipitation that we had to deal with was dew. :-)
