Story: Another great backpacking weekend in the Sierra, brought to us by Rebecca (Calipidder)...
We hiked from the trailhead at the Wilderness Parking lot by Loon Lake, to Buck Island lake. It's about 6 miles. The first part of the hike, along Loon Lake was mostly flat and shady. The second section, leaving Loon Lake, and climbing up to a pass between the two lakes was more exposed, and very "rocky". The altitude and the heat made the a little tougher than I initially thought but it was still pleasant, with great views on Loon. The climb down to Buck Island lake was quite gentle but still very rocky so we had to watch our steps, especially with heavy backpacks. On the way, we spotted tons of beautiful wildflowers, the most amazing being the Sierra Tiger Lilies.
Once camp was set, I started fishing, hoping to catch dinner. No luck, we now know that there is no fish in this lake ;-)
We pretty much spent the day relaxing by the water, observing a very active Sierra Garter snake swimming by. We stared in awe when we saw him swallowing a small fish he had caught.
We had a relaxing evening (despite very annoying mosquitoes), a peaceful night, and a wonderful breakfast by the water before leaving the area. We went back to the trailhead the same way we came., taking even more pictures of pretty flowers.

Tips: Potable water and restroom at the trailhead.
