Story:
Cloudy late-June weekend in Central Oregon. Decided to stay "low" and do the Misery Ridge hike around Smith Rock.

*LATER ADDITION: Here is some back-story on how Misery Ridge got its name: http://www.nuggetnews.com/main.asp?Search=1&ArticleID=16004&SectionID=6&SubSectionID=&S=1

Misery Ridge loop has a very steep ascent and descent from the Crooked River to the Monkey Face. Monkey face is a ~200 foot tall rock promontory with a distinctive shape (you figure out what that is!). The Crooked River is so crooked because it is wedged between two lava flows from different eras. You can see hat out in the topo map

The rocky landscape is gorgeous and wildlife, especially birds, are abundant. Eagles, Blue Heron, Hawks, Magpies, Larks, etc.n The most prominent features is a rock promontory called the Monkey Face.

Perfect weather for it. Fair amount of cloud cover kept us cool.

Smith Rock is an unusual and scenic volcanic rock formation in Central Oregon. Very popular for climbers - you see license plates from all over the US in the parking lot.

I took tons of pictures and loaded about 30 of them on everytrail. enjoy!
Tips:
Hike early in teh year or in cloudy weather. Bring plenty of water. The parking lot tends to fill up by ~ 10:00 or so.
