Story:
I first did this trip with Graeme who is a local. This trip can have everthing form flat water and mangroves to swell and tidal races. As usual in Port Stephens there is a good chance of dolphins.

Tips:
Port Stephens can be deceptively treachous to cross. In particular from Nelsons Head to Jimmys beach crosses the opening in the heads and the swell outside. When this swell reaches the shallow wateri in the middle of the crossing it can start to break. SImilarly when crossing back from Corrie Is there is shallow bar about half way (you can go to the east of it if necessary for calmer water). Know your weather forecast and your limitations!
The entrance to Corrie Is passage can be hard to find particularly in low tide when the surf on the bar can be hard to distinguish from the surf on the adjacent beach.
For an extra twist you can take a detour through the mangroves by the channel on the western side of Corrie Island.
