Story:
Nice backroad ride to our first ride to Beartown State Forest. No stop signals, just a windy two land ride straight into the park. Park rangers wasted no time collecting the $5 parking fee and we were happy to oblige even though Mark\'s was expired... "I thought 09 meant good through 09!" No Mark, it means expires in 09. Get on that!
We pull into the ORV lot and meet up with Dave, who looks like he\'s enjoying a morning beer and has been sitting there for hours. Two other yammies are getting ready to launch too. We suit up and head out first to Wildcat trail.
We met our first discouraging hill climb and Superman, I mean Mark, came back looking for us or maybe he was looking for his cape. In any event, we all got over and gave each other the \"I hope the rest of this place isn\'t all like this\" look. The two yammies blow by us like we were stading still and we were. We trekked on and came to a dead end.
Ut Oh! Lookout Trail. WTF? Mark thought he heard "Make Out" trail... OK we need to leave NOW! This is Beartown Mountain not Brokeback. A quick look at the map and we realized we were not travelling north like we thought, but south. A quick turn around and we were back on Wildcat and connect to Turkey Trail. Did someone say Turkey?
Turkey was quite delicious. Started off with some rocks but quickly turned into some nice juicy trail. Nice wide open 3rd 4th gear humming. Nice natural woops and some tasty downhills. We connect to Sky Peak Trail and again think we are heading North but actuall my GPS shows we took the southern loop.
Sky Peak is gnarly, wet, root-rock-laiden rutted goodness. Not the dessert we were expecting after the Turkey Trail main course. This had to be the trail at its worst; it had just rained for 3 days straight. No company has designed a tire to ride this strip. Oh yeah, the yammies passed us again, they were on their second time around. Holy crap we\'re slow. We finished Sky Peak, got access to the service road, and made way back to the parking lot. Lunch!
Brian\'s Summer sausage was the bit snack hit. Brian always has some weird meat on him on every trip. Anywho... We pound some grub and fluids and say goodbye to Dave. 10 miles for Dave on some very difficult terrain. Not too shabby for 3rd time out. This place is October Mountain JR, not very dirt bike friendly but we were having a blast.
We then head out to Wildcat again, this time heading North like we wanted and connect to BeeBe Trail. This was a nice loop, a little short but very nice. We connect to the western leg of Sky Peak and then do the evil section of Sky Peak once again. I think it was even more gnarly the second time. That LOOONNNGGG section of mud, ruts, rocks, logs and tree can beat on you. This also about the time Craig notices his back wheel acting all squirrelly. Ride that bike, BABY!
We gain access to the Sky Peak service road and travel a bit to Airplane Trail. This was a challenging trail but not as wet. I liked its rolling hills and tight turns. We connect to the northern portion of Turkey trail and pop out to the main park road. Craig does a quick inspection of his back wheel and there's the problem. Blown wheel beering. That wheel was rotating like, like, um, like... I got nothing, like how a wheel is not supposed to rotate.
We head to the truck, load up, have a few adult sodas and leave for home. Awesom day of riding.
Trail report.
