Story:
Mt. Apatite is a fun place to take the kids to do some mining for gems. The most common minerals found in the area are feldspar, quartz and mica but we've also found trace amounts of garnet and tourmaline as well. It's a short hike to the quarries from the trail head but you have to walk through the Maine National Guard post so be sure to stay on the trail until you get to the public lands (about 1/4 mile from the trail head). We also created an EarthCache at Mt. Apatite if you want to get credit for an EarthCache find if you're in the area. It's called "Gem Trackers." Gem Trackers on geocaching.com
