Story:
This could be described as the 'Tea-shop' trail ~ 4 passed en-route.
As it was a hot day and 'Sweep' and 'Crunchy' came along, plenty of 'water' opportunities were essential for canine comfort.
Although of modest height, this route does take in a steep ascent from valley floor to Dock Tarn.
The paths are good although stony and the wet areas are well catered for with strategically placed rocks.
Dock Tarn and Watendlath are justifiably popular destinations. The route through the Lodore area and also the return alongside the River Derwent are a delight at any season of the year.
Great Crag, although a Wainwright 'top', is not that well known. The Dock Tarn path not visiting it's summit. The whole area is cloaked in heather with only intermittent paths.
Wainwright says ~ " On the right sort of day (warm sunshine) and at the right time of year (August), the top of Great Crag, carpeted with lovely heather, is quite the right place to be" - we got that right then !!

Tips:
As it says above - A warm day in August is the best time to enjoy Great Crag
Parking at Stonethwaite is free on along the roadside.

A steep start up stoney steps through trees, which on a hot day provided some much needed shade! There was also plenty of water on route for the dogs to cool off in!
