Story:
Russian Ridge is one of the 26 Open Space Preserves in the MidPeninsula Regional Open Space District. http://is.gd/NtE38p
This was a geocaching hike to 'clear' the western side of Russian Ridge. The track log has been modified to remove a leg that would have allowed for a 'brute force' of a geocache puzzle final location. The trip as hiked was 3.53 miles with under 1000' accent/descent.
It seemed hotter than the other day when I was up here so I thought I might have to cut it short as heat wipes me out. I brought more water than last hike and had plenty. As soon as I got on the ridge, although under a bright hot sun, there was a COOL breeze all morning! It was coming off the coast which was socked in with fog most of the time. Very pleasant. Surprisingly, it was much warmer, nearly hot in the shade of Ancient Oaks Trail, I guess cause there was no air movement at all. When I got back to my car its thermometer said 87°. That seemed a few degrees less than what I would have guessed.
I only saw one person all morning. A guy riding a mountain bike way too fast to notice I had a geocache in hand.
Cache wise, I found 3 traditionals and one puzzle final. I think I now have the western portion of Russian Ridge cleared unless there is a puzzle lurking. One cache under heavy tree cover gave me a bit of trouble. I looked a good 20 minutes, mostly on the wrong side of the trail up a STEEP hill. I have to think my 60CSx would have given me better coords under the heavy tree cover but I'll never know for sure. Naturally the cache was down the STEEP hill!
I've hiked this area a few times in different weather conditions from even hotter to windy and snowy. It's all good! :-)
