Story: bumanfam Dad and bumanfam Dog headed out to snag some FTFs on a cold, blustery, rainy/sleety/snowy day.  Blizzard warnings took effect at 6:00 (our trip ended just after 7:00).  Anyone who says Iowa has no hills has never been to the Loess Hills!

We managed to get all four FTFs that were available today, and also three other caches.  With all the rain, cold, and wind, we didn't watch very closely for other caches along our way.  We missed out on at least three that were within an estimated 150 feet of our trail!  We also DNFed one cache.  Actually, we found it, we just didn't have everything we needed to actually sign the log - namely longer legs!  There are still 9 caches in the Preserve for us to go back and find.  The other good news?  It will soon be mushroom season, and 5 Ridges is a great place for morels!
Tips: Bring plenty of water, no matter the season.  These hills are very steep, even on the trails.  Be sure to think about your pooch, should you bring one - there aren't a lot of watering holes along the trail.  These are hiking trails only - no wheels!  There are different hunting seasons here and prescribed fires are part of the conservation efforts - pay attention to the info board on your way in!

Wow, I joined this site just to post a great big "Thanks". I have been to Five Ridges quite a bit and really enjoyed your Trip Story. Too bad I'm techie challenged! Thanks again.

Would like to have added waypoints to this trip for each of the caches, and differentiate between the ones we found on this trip, the ones we'd found prior to this trip, and the ones we've not yet found - to illustrate just how close we got to some that we didn't even attempt! But alas, that's not an easy thing to do on this site right now. Oh, well.

Made some major improvements - including getting the photos upright!

We didn't take the time to set the photos of the trail markers upright. Sorry, folks!
