Story:
Another beautiful hike. We had been doing a lot of East Bay hikes, but since the weather is hotter now, we decided it was time to go back to the Sierra Nevada area.
Another beautiful hike. We had been doing a lot of East Bay hikes, but since the weather is hotter now, we decided it was time to go back to the Sierra Nevada area.
We chose to hike the Rubicon Trail from Vikingsholm to Calawee Cove.
We drove to the parking lot at Vikingsholm and paid the $10.00 entrance fee. Even after 10:00 there were still a few parking spaces open.
From here a paved road will take you down about 1 mile to the Vikingsholm Mansion on Emerald Bay. There are restrooms down there too. Then just follow the signs to pick up the Rubicon Trail.
The trail follows the shoreline and you'll have great views of the lake and surrounding mountains. There's an island in Emerald Bay that contains what is left of the "Tea House", a building constructed by the owner of Vikingsholm, Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight.
From Vikingsholm to Calawee Cove is 4.6 miles. So depending how far away you parked this trail will be about 11 miles.
Near Calawee Cove is an old wooden lighthouse that looks like an outhouse on a cliff. You can hike to it, but we were happy to take pictures of it from the Rubicon Trail.
Tips:
$10.00 fee to park at Vikingsholm.

No dogs allowed on the Rubicon Trail.
Restrooms down near the mansion (about a mile from the parking lot).
