Story:
Mt. Lindsey, at 14,042 feet, was our 24th 14er and our first 14er in the Sangre de Cristo range. We climbed this peak on its north face from the Huerfano River Trailhead. There are many campsites on the road leading to the TH and at the TH. From the Lily Lake Trail, make sure to branch left off the trail. There is a sign at this point for Lily Lake, but not one for Lindsey. After leaving the river, the trail begins a very, very steep climb, which does not relent throughout the hike. Lindsey's north face is very steep, especially the rubble filled chute that you climb up. I strongly recommend a helmet and not to bring a dog (which we followed neither of these recommendations, but I wish we would have!). The chute itself is a class 2+, but with so much loose rock, the class 3 climbing to the right of the chute is almost easier. There were several other climbers the day we summitted and one idiot who was sending lots of large rocks down the chute. From Lindsey, there are awesome views of Little Bear, Blanca, and Ellingwood. The mileage was closer to 8.5 miles. I believe with the energy saving setting on the GPS, we lose a little accuracy with mileage.
