Story:
Started this day hike from the Eureka Ski Bowl parking lot. If you have 4 wheel drive, or even a vehicle with decent clearance, you can save 1.3 miles (each way) and around 700' elevation by driving the dirt road to Eureka Lake. From Eureka Lake, you head west across the Eureka Lake dam to begin the Eureka Peak loop trail. Around .5 miles from the lake, you will hit the Y in the trail. I recommend taking the loop counterclockwise (left) as the climb up is a bit more gradual going that way. You will pass the false peak on the way up on your left. Continue the trail around to the real peak at around 7,500 feet. The views are spectacular! On a clear day you can see Mt. Lassen to the north, Mt. Elwell, Pilot Peak, and the Sierra Buttes. On the way down you will find that Eureka Lake can be quite nice for a swim.
Please note that the trail is all within the bounds of Plumas-Eureka State Park and no dogs are allowed past the lake. :-( Also, if you drive to Eureka Lake, the gate from the ski bowl parking lot is locked in evening so you will want to back to your car and leaving Eureka Lake before the rangers come to lock up.
