Story:
A great sailing trip from Galway Harbour to the smallest of the Aran Islands -Inish Oirr. Some significant historical sites can be found here Teampall Chaomhain (St Caomhan's chapel) the oldest part of this chapel is approximately 1000 years old. The wonder of this roofless structure is enhanced by the fact that it is partially buried in sand. You can see the medieval O'Brien castle from far away. The castle was build within an earlier oval stone fort -Dun Formna. Some archaeologists argue that these two castles and the earlier island forts were built in part as command centres for the important sea trading routes in the vicinity. The medows and grassland around are framed by a maze of old stonewalls and covered by a myriad of lime-loving plants including early purple orchids, honeysuckle, harebell, and Burnet Roses. A short walk towards the west of the island brings you along some tached cottages and not far is the Islands largest lake -Loch Mor and important habitat for ducks, swans and other water fowls. We continued or walk and found the famous shipwreck "The Plassey" -the ship ran aground in the 1960s in a storm. After a sunny walk over the island we setteed for a cold pint of guinness and a great meal after. The Islanders are friendly and it is far less frequented by tourist as the Inish Mor (the biggest of the Aran Islands) Highly recommended trip for everybody who wants to enjoy the treasures of the Irish Westcoast.
