会津三十三観音(AizuThirtythreeGoddess) - Fukushima Prefecture, Japan

 The Thirty three goddess walk is ancient Aizu area custom. Around A.C1900, it requires 1 week to trail each 33 goddess by walk.

 The purpose of trail is various, ex: hope to cure from disease of some family. But the most famous purpose is the training for bride lady. During 1 week walk, she can see other family's lifestyle and area of Aizu. She can take knowledge to make her family happy.

 In Japanese Buddhism, it is said that everybody can go to the heaven after death. This 33 goddess(called Kannon) lives between the heaven and this world, and they can go to the heaven after making a man's dream come true. Kannon is half of god, so they have some knowledge or power that some dream come true. 

 I hope thus good custom will be continue for the future.

巡礼の目的はさまざまですが、家族の病の回復を祈念することなどにより巡礼されることもあるそうです。しかし、もっとも一般的なものは、新婚の花嫁の修業として行われてきたものです。巡礼者は歩きで1週間かけて三十三の観音をめぐる事で、各家庭の家事を知ることができます。それにより、各自の家庭を守る知恵をつけると同時に、広く社会を見聞し会津をよく知る事が目的とされていました。今でもその風習は一部に残っており、実際の巡礼者には女性が多いです。

各観音堂にはそれぞれの歌があり、村のお祭りの時などには数名での歌詠みがされる事がありました。今でも高齢者では、三十三観音すべての歌を暗唱している女性がいます。人によっては日々の仏壇への念仏に歌詠みをする人もいます。

大乗仏教では、基本すべての人が仏様になれるとされています。観音様はこの世と仏の世界の中間に存在し、この世の人の願いをかなえることで、功徳を積み、やがて仏になれるとされています。書いて字のごとく、人の音（声）を観る（聞く）ことから観音様と言われています。

自己の心の平穏のため、誰かの安泰のため、世の中の平和のため・・・それぞれの目的でこの美風が継続してほしいと思います。
