Story:
Touring the bird rookeries before the end of nesting season on Lake Rousseau is so worth getting up at 5:00am. There are approximately 15 different documented species of birds that have been spotted on Lake Rousseau during the nesting season. Today we can add another species... the Golden Crowned Night Heron. And while previous trips found us searching for the elusive Least Bittern, today, they were easily spotted among the grasses. Sand Hill Cranes and Pig Frogs could be heard over the unmistakable sounds of the lake's alligators. It's a bit like an Evinrude outboard motor.
The weather was perfect - okay, it got a little hot/humid by mid morning - but the breeze made it a bit more tolerable. We were back at the launch site by 11:00am.

Tips:
There are no restrooms at the launch and little in the way of areas to get out and stretch. Bring lots of water, snacks and a good GPS - it's easy to get turned around with all the islands. Outside the boat channels are submerged tree stumps, better to paddle slow enough to avoid getting 'stumped'.
