Story:
For a special celebration, five of my closest buds and our six horses spent the weekend in Dugas, Az. We rode through the Sycamore Creek and Pine Mountain Wilderness, taking FR 677A to Rice Peak and back. Beautiful ride. We saw White Tail deer, Mule deer, Elk and javalina as well as numerous types of birds. Access through the Horner Mountain Ranch is no longer open. Sadly, the landowner had to close access through the private portion of the ranch due to littering, vandalism (mostly holes shot in water tanks), and gates being left open during the hunting season. Pine Mountain is where the highest concentration of elk can be found. It is an area abundant in wildlife. The area is a beautiful one with wide open vistas of desert grass land, piñon/juniper dotted slopes and rangelands. You can still see remnants of the 2005 forest fire that decimated Black Mesa. But there are still spectacular trails and amazing views. A perfect weekend with friends and ponies.
Tips:
This is real ranching country. Lots of gates. Leave them like you found them. Be aware of hunting seasons.
