Story:
This was a beautiful hike. A little muddy in places and a little steep in other places, but several nice waterfalls to see and all the beauty of Mount Diablo. There are several creek crossings to make and with the water high, we had to be careful (I got my feet wet at one crossing). The hike starts in Clayton at the Regency Gate entrance. There's no fee, but you have to park in a neighborhood on Regency Drive. We followed tommangan's guide and edgarstiles' gpx track. The trails are well marked, but be sure to look at all 4 sides of the trail posts, so you don't miss a junction. We just started hiking in July of last year, so it's nice to finally start seeing the wildflowers. The hills are full of blooming California Lilacs right now (mid April).

Tips:
No facilities at the trail head, but on Regency Drive at the traffic light is a Community park with some restrooms.

No worries. We figured it out. There were many friendly hikers on this trail, especially for January and they were helpful in guiding us. :-) Happy Trails.

@missfaline: Yeah, I think I remember we missed a turn along the way and had to back track a little. Glad you thought it was worth it too! And thanks for the heads up about the ice in January.

I wasn't entirely comfortable with the directions from this site. Additionally, in January there is A LOT of ice on the trail in the higher elevation. It was a little challenging to navigate but worth it!
