Story:
I was given a wonderful birthday gift of a free day... so I spent part of it on an old favorite hike, a perfect way to spend some time off Skyline Drive when you don't have a lot of time.
I was given a wonderful birthday gift of a free day... so I spent part of it on an old favorite hike, a perfect way to spend some time off Skyline Drive when you don't have a lot of time.
The trail (and my preferred route) goes down following El Corte de Madera Creek, a delightful and shady canyon full of water, moss, ferns and redwoods, then angles up and around the hillside, eventually going right near the curious-looking tafoni (weathered sandstone) formations that are one of the highlights of the preserve.
It's a great way to spend just a little bit of time when you have many other obligations.
Tips:
- Parking for this hike is at Skeggs Point (Caltrans Vista Point), on the east side of the highway; the trailhead is about 200 feet north on the west side of the highway. Be careful of traffic, people drive fast here!
- At the right time of year, you can find banana slugs! Watch out, both for your delight and their safety.
- Because there is a creek, the canyon is often quite cool. Be prepared.
