Story:
Initially this night hike was supposed to be at the old Nike missile site at the end of Vantage Pointe Dr., in Rowland Heights. Since there was security actually doing their job there, it thwarted our plans. No biggie, we had a back-up plan. Since Schbarum Park is just down the street, we headed there.
This year we plan to get more night hikes in and try to be more consistent about them, so that it is more convenient for people to attend. We started off of the Old Fullerton Rd, off Fullerton rd (if that makes sense to any of you). We parked, readied our gear, and got acquainted with some new people and with some people that haven't been out for a long time. A few of us had our new headlamps that we had recently purchased and were ready to use them with the push of a finger!
JennG was on the hike, as usual, and so was JennJ. JennJ hadn't been out in a long time and mentioned she wanted to start hiking as of the new year, so, I invited her, and that was that. There were two new people that I had heard of, but never actually met in person. The first one is Ramiro. I've heard about him before but never actually hiked with him, now, with there being two Ramiros that hike regularly, it got kinda confusing, and on top of that, the other three Ramiros that I know, so, you see how messy that got. The second was Lisa. She ended up being just as easy to get along as Ramiro, but in a smaller package.
Once we got in the road, the chit chat started and I basically created a route, on-the-fly. It was dark, cold, eerie, but regardless, we were out to get a decent workout in. We followed some roads for most of the way and went off trail a few times. Along the way, we encountered cold and warm spots in the air fairly frequently. We heard noises, both, familiar and unfamiliar. We were startled a few times and we even saw three deer on hilltop as we started our hike. We mostly talked, got to know each other and, caught up on stuff. We finished the roughly 4.5 mile hike in just over two hours. One thing that stands out about this hike, was the amount of times that I had to stop and pee. I had no idea why, but I feel as if I watered the whole park. Who knows, maybe next time we go by, the dry brush will be a brilliant green?
The hike was short and sweet and from there we left just after midnight, after we said our goodbyes. I'm looking forward to more night hikes with the team and to meeting new people along the way. Xtreme Hikers!
