Story:
For today's family vacation excursion, we ventured out in the drizzly Southside West area. We had breakfast at the nearby Centra convenience store grill; very much a quick stop for local people.
From there, we walked over to the Georges Street Arcade and did some shopping. Then we continued to St Patrick's Cathedral.
St. Patrick's Cathedral. At St Patrick's, the National Cathedral of Ireland, is a must see! The site has history dating back to the 450; the original Norman church on this site dates back to 1191, and today's cathedral building dates back to the a major reconstruction in 1860. Look for St. Patrick and Jonathan Swift. We were approached by one of the church's guides, named Reg, who told us about this history of the church and the many memorials. This was a delightful visit. It was very much worth the $5/person fee.
Christ Church Cathedral. We then took a short, rainy walk North to Christ Church Cathedral. With is origin located near the original Viking settlement, the church dates back to 1028, with the current building extensively renovated in the 1870s. The Victorian restoration reveals only a few remaining medieval features. The interior looks newer, simpler, with fewer monuments. Still very nice. Be sure to look for St Laurence O'Toole, the treasures in the crypt and the famous cat and rat. We shared a nice slice of apple pie in the crypt cafe.
Guinness St James Gate Brewery. With the rain mostly stopped (the rain never really ever stopped this day!), we meandered West to the Guinness St James Gate Brewery. This was a self guided tour of the Guinness beer making process. It was very visual with lots of interesting video shorts. Our tour ended with an elevator ride to the 7th floor to have our complementary pint of Guinness and a beautiful view of Dublin. The bar was a big party. People were singing and having a great time. Guinness really does taste the best in Dublin!!
Temple Bar. It was night time and time for dinner and we had done all the walking we wanted to do for the day; we decided to take a cab back to our hotel room and went out for dinner in the Temple Bar area. I snapped a few pictures of some of the more colorful pubs. This was a really fun (but a little damp) day for the tourists!
Tips:
Both of the churches and the brewery had entry fees. This was expected and ok.
