My brother and I did this hike in two days last weekend. We parked one car at each end of the route. Hit the trail at 1pm and reached the ridge site at around 7:30. We were originally going to stay at Pinetop the second night and hike to Pine Springs in the morning, but we reached pinetop sooner than expected and ended up hiking back to the Headquarters that same day. Needless to say we didn't make it back before the McKittick gate closed so we camped out in Pine Springs until the next morning. The foretrex said it was about 20 miles total. I packed 10 liters or water and ended up with about 1 liter left. We decided to take this route just to get McKittrick out of the way the first day.

We did the hike in two days and grabbed a ride back to the car with campers at Pine Springs. You could double back in four days. Another option, Backpacker in the Jan '11 issue suggested a 24.8 mile four day route starting in McKittrick canyon staying at McKittrick Ridge night one (we used the same site), staying at Dog Canyon night two then doubling back.

Hi! My friend and I are heading to Guadalupe Mountains to do this hike -- can I ask, did you do 2 days or 3? and how did you arrange transportation?

I did this exact trip October 23-25. It was very challenging, but the fall colors were amazing. The view right as you near the top of McKittrick ridge and look over is breath-taking. I really enjoyed the hike, but I think I'd start at Pine-Springs next time to avoid hiking up at McKittrick Canyon.
