Story:
This is actually a combined Mountain Bike and Hike trip. The first 6 miles in we biked, and the last two miles we hiked. Start at the beach at Waddell Creek and go up the dirt road. Local residence use the first mile or two, so it is possible to see a car, but after that bikers and hikers and bannana slugs are all you will see. Well, we did see a couple of newts too. The first 6 miles the trail appears to be an old logging road, but the creek has eaten it away to single track in a few spots, and the trail goes up the hill side a few feet in one spot where the creek ate the old road and into the hill. Big Basin State Park provides a bike rack at the 6 mile point where bikes are not permitted beyond. Everyone brings a lock, but they are probably not even needed. The walk to Berry Falls is very scenic as most of the bike ride taking you through redwood groves and along the creek. Berry Falls is wide and probably a hundred feet tall. The trail a mile past Berry Falls is worth the walk and has a couple 50 foot water falls about the mile point where I turned back. Another half mile further takes you to a back pack camp ground for those who can still sleep on the ground and hike all the way in. We started at noon and were back by 5 PM, so it is not too long of trip if you bike/hike it, but you could definetly enjoy the whole day in the area if you have the time.
