Story:
The BRC50 is the annual down river kayak/canoe race between Mareeba and Kuranda held early May. The BRC12 is the junior race held over the first 12km leg of the course. The photos show the put in and get out. A number of river shots provide a snapshot of the main skillset of paddling skills required to either race or socially paddle this section. Whilst the junior record sits at 63 minutes, a socially acceptable time for a first descent with break at emerald creek junction would be 3 hours. Allow 30 minutes extra for a car shuttle. An ideal medium skill canoe paddle for visitors wanting a half day trip.

Tips:
River height is very important on this upper river section. Use this simple guide as a reference. Mareeba BOM river heights (1.65m) safe paddle with a few sand bars appearing. River channel defined with no alternate shutes operational. (1.88m) good lower race height. Left channel in lower third of stage provides some route choice. Helmets likely to be used on some branches. (>1.95m) serious river skills required to negotiate path around snags- tree branches and tangles. (>2.10) fast flow breaking across banks allows paddlers to avoid many S bends.. Helmets, PFD's and footware should be worn on all river trips of this nature.'
