In the 70s and 80s, some Chinese University students rented a room in an orchard near the campus. Over the years, the orchard has almost been deserted.
On 9 Sept 2011, I took a walk from New Asia College on the hill top of the Chinese University of Hong Kong all the way down to the orchard which is located at the bottom of the valley on the other side of the hill.
I was surprised to find that the orchard had not been bought up by the university because the university has been expanding its campus very rapidly. The orchard is still a private property although it is right inside the campus circus which is circling the whole university.
Nothing in the orchard has changed compared with twenty years ago except the houses in the orchard are older and no students live there any more. The narrow trail which leads to Shaw College is still there. Strangely, there is a new white house built near the orchard which doesn’t fit in the surrounding.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
My phone battery ran out just when I was about to take a photo of the old houses. :(
The location of the old houses is exactly at the end point of this route.
Take the school bus from University MTR station to New Asia College or Shaw College before going down to the orchard.
Another way of reaching the orchard is to start from the University MTR station, walk along Station Road, then Seaside Drive, Campus Circus North and finally Campus Circus West. While on Campus Circus West, turn left to a small path when you see a small road sign with no words on it. Follow that path and you will reach the old houses in the orchard.
The whole walk takes about 25 minutes.
