Story:
Santa Cruz Island is one of the five Channel Islands off the California coast.  We took Island Packers boat from Ventura Harbor to Scorpian Achorage on the east side of the island which is under control by the National Park Service.  The boat trip is about 23 miles and takes one hour.  The west side of the island is controlled by the Nature Conservancy.  The island is well protected from human influence.  We hiked to Potato Harbor Trail from Scorpian Ranch to Potato Harbor and returned to the ranch via the Cavern Point Trail.  We had a nice lunch at Cavern Point.  Then we hiked the Scorpion Canyon Loop Trail which starts and returns to the Scorpian Ranch.  The scenery is just beautiful with high cliffs and crystal clear blue-green ocean.  We saw two island fox which are indigenous to the island.  There are many special plants and birds as well.  Also saw dolphins and sea lions.  This place is a must for all to see.
Tips:
Dress in layers as early morning can be foggy and cool, the island can get windy and afternoon can get warm in the canyon.  Make sure you watch your time as boat leaves at 4:30 or 5:00 and if you miss it--you must stay on the island overnight.
