Story: It wasn't hard to find Tim Obendorf: the Kam Sheung Rd train station's parking lot was almost empty, so the white Mountain Biking Asia van with 4 bikes behind it really stood out!
Tim, a veteran cyclist who leads tours throughout Asia, fitted the bikes and equipped us with helmets -- then led us in a stretching workout to get ready to roll.
This 27-km ride is not difficult: all but some paved hills near the end is flat, with a few rough stretches of gravel or bumpy concrete. However, it wends its way through narrow streets in semi-rural villages that few visitors would likely see except by bike. Tim knows the area well: he came to HK on a volunteer aid program 25 years ago and has lived there since.
Our ride was just after Chinese New Year celebrations, so the many local temples we passed were festooned with posters and welcomes to the new Year of the Ox.
The massive apartment complex in the nearby Tin Shui area dominates the wetlands area. Fortunately, the very popular Hong Kong Wetlands Park acts as a buffer between the high rise buildings and the mangroves and fish ponds. We ended our cycle trip at the Park, and said our goodbyes to Tim.

Tips: The Wetlands Park is well worth a visit: it was crowded the day we were
there, but very clean and well interpreted to help people learn about
the wetlands and their importance to the local ecology.
