Story:
This is one of the first hikes I ever did in Acadia, but I had never GPS'ed it and hadn't done it in ages. So the weekend after the 4th of July we made a trip. The absolute best aspect of any Mansell Mountain hike is that the trails are not heavily used. In fact, during our afternoon hike we saw only one other couple on the trail, despite being at the height of the season.

I consider Perpendicular Trail to be fairly strenuous... it's basically straight up on a lot of fairly tall steps. It's a bit of work, but it's only a mile, and the rest of the hike is pretty easy and mostly flat. To make the overall hike a little harder, turn on to Razorback Trail before you get to the Great Notch. The descent there is a little more difficult and more interesting. This is in fact what we meant to do, but somehow missed the marker... so keep your eyes peeled!
You can find the online description we followed here.
Tips:
To get to the trail head:
From Southwest Harbor - North on 102 0.7 miles to Seal Cove Road, turn right (West) and go 0.6 miles to Long Pond Road, turn right and drive 1.2 miles until the road ends. The trail head is near the pumping station.
Somesville - South on 102 4.5 miles to Seal Cove Road, turn left (West) and go 0.6 miles to Long Pond Road, turn right and drive 1.2 miles until the road ends. The trail head is near the pumping station.
