Story:
This was my first time at the Colgate University mountain biking trails, located up the hill from the private liberal arts university located in Hamilton, NY. From my home the drive was about 35 minutes southeast.
We parked down in the village of Hamilton and did some road riding through the village into the Colgate campus. A light climb on the streets of the university to the back of the campus where we finally turned off pavement and onto grass. A quick ride through a recreational field and into the trailhead.
We spent the mile climbing on what seemed to be a small stream bed of loose rocks but really was a trail that acted as a temporary stream from all of the rain this spring was handing out.
The tight singletrack that wove through the woods was littered with log obstacles, most ride-able but a few that were just too large for my comfort. When we finally reached a downhill section we all held the speed back slightly in the event that one of these obstacles was waiting around a bend in the trail.
After looping around the top for another mile or so through some very enjoyable, tight singletrack, we were treated to a fast, windy, and clean downhill out of this trail complex on a trail called the "car wash" or what some in our group labeled "The tick collector," thanks to the tall grass making up the walls of the trail.
An enjoyable network of trails but just a bit too short in distance for the one hour round trip car ride needed to ride here. We will be back, though, to see if we are able to find some more trails to add some miles to the ride.
