In my opinion this ride is an absolute must for single track fans.
In my opinion this ride is an absolute must for single track fans.
The ride through Hockett Gulch and Tick Alley is a steady 3.5 mile climb with the last .5 miles being the toughest section. There are a few tight spots on the way up that make for some exciting, technical single track climbing.
Once you get to the top of Tick Alley make a hard right to begin your decent down Fast Times (BLM recognizes this trail as Fast Times but the trail markers read "Elk Drop"). This is one of the more exciting single track trails to ride down, with rocks, roots, mini-birms, and a few low hanging branches that almost took my head off!
The last section of this ride takes you through the twisty, narrow valley of Star Wars. Yes, you will feel like you are in a spacecraft as you bob and weave down this very exciting single track trail.
This ride is very representative of all the different terrain Hardscrabble Mountain has to offer. I highly recommend it for all intermediate/advanced riders while they are in the Eagle, Co area.
Tips:
The trail head that we used is not BLM recognized. Use the Horton Street (School House Rock) trail head and then ride to Hockett Gulch if you want to access this ride from a BLM recognized trail head.
