Story:
Auburn Recreation Area (quarry trail). After a morning of driving around Foresthill I stopped at the nearby middle fork of the American River for a very short but highly entertaining hike.
Auburn Recreation Area (quarry trail). After a morning of driving around Foresthill I stopped at the nearby middle fork of the American River for a very short but highly entertaining hike.
Tips:
Starts alongside 49 and heads down a fire road sized trail alongside the river. After about a mile your trail heads up past several concrete structures and into the hills. Take a right before the cave. When you enter the amphitheater-like section of cut stone, go directly up the little goat trail that cuts off a bunch of fire road. It's almost climbing in sections and is a definite workout by the time you've reached the top (I ran straight up). At the top is the fire road again as well as a nice mineshaft to the left 20 feet. Backtrack down the fireroad a bit and you'll come to a severe switchback in the fire road with a small trail leading away to the left. Take the small trail, which leads to a shortcut back to the fire road. Also includes a small yet rad waterfall and section of trail in the little creek itself (very cool). Once back at the lot, hike up to the road and cross it. Go downhill a bit and take yet another fire road sized path to the left. 1/4 mile further to a super old and picturesque bridge with many trails leading down to the American river. Lots of spots to throw out a few towels and have lunch, maybe dive into a shallow bend in the river and feel some icy water. Some light scrambling to be had as well. Very short hike with lots of personality and options.
