A great short climb for some great views of the San Francisco Bay.
This Trails Challenge hike starts at the Stonewall-Panoramic Trail gate on Stonewall road behind the Claremont Hotel. The Stonewall-Panoramic Trail winds through Eucalyptus trees until you get to an open area with great views. Continue to climb up the steep hill to the ridge with a bench that overlooks the entire Bay Area.
From here pass through the gate, along a short section of street, before turning right onto the Stonewall-Panoramic Trail. The trail will continue to roll up and down until the crest of the hill at the UC East-West Trail. This is the turn around point for the Trails Challenge, but for a bit more climb continue on to Grizzly Peak.
Stay on the dirt fire road until you reach a large open meadow, where you go right to descend to Grizzly Peak Blvd. Follow the road south for about 100 ft and take the single track Side Hill Trail back for fantastic views of the bay. When you reach the East West Trail intersection go West on the Claremont Canyon Trail to the Upper Jordan Trail and turn left. Follow this dirt road for about 0.5 mile where you see a trail on your left that climbs back to the Stonewall-Panoramic Trail, where we retrace our steps to the entrance gate.
