Great 3.3 mile trail to a swimming hole near Alpine, California.
Trips 1-20 of 24 for "horsethief canyon" Trips

I joined up with a group of hikers from meetup.com. I had never met any of the hikers before the day of the hike. I picked up two others on the way to carpool since it was a ways out. We all, there were 10 of us in all, met in the trailhead parking lot and waited for the leader. After we left the parking lot, we headed north on a Forest Service...

Started at the Lyons Valley Rd trailhead, intended to head a lot farther up Secret Canyon. Was turned back by the overgrown trail and poison oak. Went up the other trail to the dirt road and came back. Lots of water in the creek and pool. Could have had a swim today, just waded in up to my shorts to cool off.
This is a short hike, with a good climb to get back to the staging area, but the pool and waterfall at the bottom of the canyon are worth the effort. We saw lots of early Spring wild flowers (and a lot of poison oak so be careful). We met a fellow hiker who claimed to have seen a mountain lion in the canyon just this morning.

This is a great, short hike down to a small swimming hole surrounded by rocks. There is some shade on the trail, but not much. When we were there (early June 2012) the water at the deepest came up to my neck. When you look on google maps Satellite view, the pool is dried out so it doesn't look like there is water year round. The hike started from a parking lot,...

Great hike that can be extended for many more miles. I turned around when I ran out of time.Extensive ticks during the summer after you pass the cave.
The White Rim Trail has been one of those "bucket list" items for me for years, particularly since owning a jeep. When we moved back to Utah in the summer of 2012, we put this trip high on our priority list. When my in-laws expressed interest in coming, I hurried and secured permits for April 26 & 27, 2013.Words and photos cannot describe the wonder and beauty of this place. It's one...

I guess in hell they have waterfalls, I assumed pitch forks and heat. Well I got the heat. Hell Creek trail starts down to get to river, some very nice little waterfalls over and around large boulders. Turned left to get on Horsethief Trail, then on to Canyon View Trail (some bushwhacking) then on to Paradise Mountain Trail, looped around back to Hell Creek Trail. Only person on trail the entire time....
Hike from the Sugarloaf Cafe to Horsethief Creek, Cactus Spring, and the Guadalupe Trail, ending at the La Quinta Cove.We set off from the Sugarloaf Cafe just as the first rays of sunshine hit the rocks above us. The forecast called for a warm day, but icy cold air was still pooled in the canyon bottoms as we made our way to Horsethief Creek, which had a good amount of water in...
Short loop hike at Pine Creek Wilderness.
Hike from the Sugarloaf Cafe to Horsethief Creek, Cactus Spring, and the Guadalupe Trail, ending at the La Quinta Cove.We started off from the Sugarloaf Cafe on a much warmer morning that we had on the same hike a month earlier. Some early flowers were blooming along the trail, and the water was higher in Horsethief Creek. Little Pinyon Flat was pretty warm, and we were happy to reach the shade of Guadalupe...
