Our intention was to reach Holt Lake. We parked at Lizard Lake and walked back to the trail start. It was an easy hike in grass with rolling hills. We reached a marsh area which I assumed to be Holt Lake. I should have check my gps map as we were about 400 m away from the lake. This was just a marsh with lots of water. Guess I'm going back. The hike was a bit much for the dog, she's gettin old. I could tell she had enough as she walked on my heels.

Sleeping Giant Head Trip 09

A trip to the Head of the Giant. We started at the trailhead parking lot and biked to Sawyer Bay. It was about a 7 km ride up and down many hills withlots of loose rock and shale. After a short stop at Sawyer Bay for a drink and to ditch the bikes, we walked .5 km along the shore of Lake Superior and made the turn for the climb to the top. It was about a 300 m climb in just over 1 km. We spent some time on top, took pictures and had lunch. Decending was slower and tougher than the climb. Your footing had to be precise as the mountain was not forgiving. A slip would be painful, a tumble disastrous. After a short stop at Sawyer Bay we made the ride back to the trailhead. Total length was 17 km with a total time of 6 hours. We started with a party of 6 and one dog. We lost two that returned to Sawyer Bay in wait for our return ( I had the keys to the bikes ). It was the second trip to the head for myself and the first for the others.

Finley Point

We parked at the Middlebrun Trail head and biked in through a second trail from Silver Islet to Middlebrun Bay. The road continues as a winter ski trail which we followed past a swampy area. Then we used a gps to bushwack about 1.5 km through the forest to Lake Superior. Very thick & hard going through the bush. After walking the shore we back tracked to the bike & back to the campground.
