just make sure climbers are spotted. A fall could mean a tumble off the trail over the precipice. Unless you have extensive bouldering experience and a rope don't let the kids or yourself get too high past the caves (which isn't that hard to do) because getting down might be a challenge. Some climbers have installed bolts at the top of the rock so top-roping the boulders is the safer option. You can continue the hike all the way to the walk-in campground. It gets even more exposed after where we turned around. From the campground you can take the high trail up and back via goat rock.

Wunderlich 10-miler Trail Run

A nice beautiful run through the woods. It's mostly shady so would be an ideal summer. In the winter the springs and the creeks come alive and it feels completely different. The run begins by climbing Bear Gulch trail. Though not overly steep it feels hard on cold legs without sufficient warm-up. The trail backs off a little and after 2 miles arrives at a pretty meadow with views toward the south east. The trail continues for another third of a mile and meets up with Alambique trail, really a fire road. Another 0.6 miles and you arrive at the Cross Roads, the intersection of Skyline trail and Alambique. There is a nice bench here should you need to rest or have a picnic. Take Alambique all the way up to the top, a gate that opens onto the intersection of Bear Gulch and Skyline Blvd. Alambique climbs gradually with relatively smooth surfaces and rarely muddy above Cross Roads. It's an opportunity to really put the pedal to the floor. From the top take Skyline trail and Alambique down. It's a fast descent because of the reasonable grade and nicely surfaced fire roads with few rocks and roots. In the winter the lower sections of Alambique gets muddy.

Pulgas Ridge Loop

Christmas Eve hike with the Morgans (Mie, Art and Daisy; It's also mismeasured and is actually 55K! Lots and lots of elevation gain and all the tough elevation happened after the 13th mile: a fast descent into Redwood Creek (Muir Woods) followed by a long climb up to Windy Gap (Dipsea Trail), then another fast descent down into Muir Woods; and for extra torture, back up Dynamite (Dipsea Trail) and down Deer Park Fire road to Frank Valley (Muir Woods again). Some participants said this is as tough as the first 50 mile of Leadville 100 (w/o the altitude of course). The climb up onto Diaz ridge was horrific and crampful. It was a beautiful, sunny and windy day in the Marin Headlands with stunning views in all directions. Crystal clear views of the pacific and the city. The views make the tortuous climbs worthwhile.Met and chatted with some interesting people on this run: Diane and Jennifer from Sacramento area (both ultra veterans, gave me lots of tips and advice about AR50), twins Clarissa and Christine from Dallas (first time 50k'ers who were a little shocked by all the hills; they were running to raise money for their mom and ALS), a young man doing his first 50k (didn't catch name but encouraged him to the next rest stop as he cramped; he didn't know about importance of salt). The twins almost made me think I was delirious because it seemed I passed the same person twice in 100 meters as they were wearing exactly the same clothes.North Face ran an super-organized event with well-stocked aid stations, well marked trails and for extra measure volunteers at all the crucial trail junctions. Only items missing at aid stations were salt capsules but fortunately I had my own. NF gave nice schwag: an NF technical shirt, a cap, a pair of socks and a water bottle. The scene was definitely a much younger crowd than at other ultra events: many more 20-somethings. Lots of young faces. Congrats to NF for introducing ultra running to more people.Photo Credit to Diane F of Sacramento.Training notes: I used Vespa (www.vespapower.com) on this run. It seems to work, i.e. keep me in the fat-burning zone. I managed to run the whole run on two bags of clif blocks, a handful of smarties, and one gel at the end. Boy, did the gel ever work! After the gel I was able to outkick a couple of other runners in the last 2 miles.

San Francisco Anniversary Biking Trip

Annette and I celebrated our 19th anniversary but taking a nice bike ride in San Francisco. We parked at the De Young and biked to the other side of the Golden Gate bridge. Then we went to Fort Mason and had lunch at Greens. We had a little time left so we rode back to the museum and took a leisurely walk through the new Maya Lin special exhibit.

Skyline to the Sea 50k

I had a great first 11 miles to the second aid station. I ran with a very talkative young women who entertain me with her stories and made the first 11 miles go fast. At the second aid station I was starting to feel a little weak (no breakfast!). In the past I have noticed that flat coke really gave me a boost. Hey if a little bit helps then a lot would help more. Right? Wrong! I guzzled 10 ounces of coke which made me feel like a zeppelin. I soon lost my talkative companion. I wish I could have stayed with her because she later finished in 6 hours + change. I felt bloated and dragged myself through the next 8 or so miles. My stomach did not feel right until after the 20th mile when I discovered the wonders of cliff gels. Wow did they ever give me a boost. Powered by gels and salt pills I managed to run most of last 10 miles to the finish. As for the bees/yellow jackets. They were a serious nuisance. At one point, three different runners simultaneously grabbed a different part of their body and screamed an expletive. It would have been hilarious if it didn\'t hurt so much. I got bitten about 10 times in various places. This was quite an experience. The trail is beautiful. I met a handful of very interesting people. And I learned some more about how my body reacts to the stress of a 50k (no more coke: cliff gels and salt pills rules). Absolutely no cramping this time. Its steep southern slope rises abruptly from the town of Mill Valley. It gave birth to mountain biking. It is famous for the infamous Dipsea Run, the second oldest footrace in the US. It is to trail runners as Mount Kailash is to buddhists. All very apropos given Marin County is often cited as a center of New Age and a prominent center of Buddhism in the West.So I set off on my own circumambulation of this beautiful mountain. Buddhist pilgrims are known to circumambulate Mount Kailash by performing full-body length prostrations all the way around the 52km route. I am not that devout and I only had 35km to go.I ran the first 7.5 miles (on the dipsea trail) with the Dips Run Club. From there I attempted to go up to Ridgecrest Blvd by way of McKennan Gulch. No luck. The trail is unmaintained and festered with large bushes of poison oak. I had to bushwack a path back down and take Willow Camp. This bushwhacking cost me a good portion of a bottle of tecnu when I got home.Willow Camp is SO STEEP. Its three mile length sapped all my strength and all I could manage after that was a jog and had to take some rest. I explored the north side of Mount Tamalpais. Much more wooded and gets fewer people. Pretty much followed north side trail off lagunitas fire road to Collier spring (pretty much dry) and to inspiration point (uninspiring). I took the precipitious steep Wheeler single-track back to Hoo-Koo-E-Koo fire road, down Temelpa back to Mill Valley. Wheeler is alot like Temelpa in a few spots except there is a lot more shade and it\'s not as sustained a drop. This was about 50% trail running and 50% hiking so I can\'t call this a run. I had two liters of water with me. This trip had few watering places. I bypassed all the obvious ones: pantoll, east peak. I didn\'t top up at Stinson Beach. I should have since I ran out after inspiration point about 4-5 miles from the end. It was nonetheless alot of fun.

PG&E and Black Mountain Trail

nice run up pg&e trail in rancho san antonio. Found my way over toblack mountain trail then back down the slow gradual way. When you get to the top of PG&E Trail, follow the trail marked by the "Bury all human waste" sign. It's a little sketchy at first though surprisingly little poison oak. Then it opens up into a trail cut through dense chaparral. I saw many freshly spray painted stakes marking the trail. It appears the MROSD plans to make this an official trail.

Rodeo Beach 50K

Second 50K. Was hot. Started cramping at the 10 mile mark. Had to walk alot because of on and off cramping for the next 20 miles. The run consists of two loops. You do the left loop once and the rigth loop twice.

Woodside 50K

This was my very first 50K. Loved it! Ran in the rain.

Zurich: Jet Lag Run

There is no better way to adjust to a new time zone and to see the city than a nice long run.
